Dog Safety

Important to always have collar and tags on your dog, if you give dog a bath immediately put collar with tags back onto your dog.
If dog gets out or lost, immediately contact rescue group, then get notification out on craigslist, post fliers in all surrounding areas, dogs travel fast so go as far out as 10miles in each direction of last place dog was seen for posting lost dog fliers.
Check fencing around perimeters of yard, check side gates, assure there is no way a dog can get out.
Locks on gates are good, but only if you keep them locked.  This is for the safety of your dogs, but as well of your family.  Dog thefts occur everyday, so lock your gates.
Toxic plants, foods, lawn fertilizer, ant/roach/rat bait and poisons (provide link to www.aspca.org)
Never leave dogs in vehicles without your supervision and NEVER leave your dog tied up outside a store, coffee house, or anywhere.  Dog thieves watch for this and it only takes a minute before your dog is taken and may never be recovered.
Traveling with your dog.
Provide info, but as well when leaving dog in hotel/motel room you must leave in carrier or crate so that if someone opens the door by accident your dog doesn’t run out and get lost in strange city, or state.  Dogs must only be in carrier or crates a total of 4 hours, never longer then this at any given time.
Coyotes and your dog.
Coyotes can jump over 12 ft fences and gates.  Coyotes are being seen on city streets, not just in the hills anymore.  They are also seen during daytime hours, not just late evening anymore.  You should never leave your small or medium size dog outside without supervision, day or night.  When you take your dog out at night it is best to have on leash, walk out to yard to let dog go potty then bring back in.  If you walk your dog on the streets, then keep dog close to your side and be alert as coyotes have grabbed dogs that are on leashes and that are with their owners.  Remember they are hungry and if they see a small or medium size dog then they do what they can to get it.  Small breed dogs also can be grabbed by Hawks, which are also being saw in city limits now, so again to reiterate, never allow your small and medium size breed dogs to have full access to a backyard or front yard without supervision.
